Fox bags rights for My Name Is Khan in Rs 100 crore deal
So what is the upcoming blockbuster My Name is Khanstarring Shahrukh Khan and Kajolworth even before it’s release? Well the answer is rather a lot, Rs 100 crore to be exact as that is the record breaking amount that Fox Star Studios have reportedly paid to buy the marketing and distribution rights for the next Karan Johar epic.
This makes it the biggest distribution deal in Bollywood pushing Aamir Khan’s Ghajini into second place with Rs 90 crore. Third place is also held by King Khan himself with the Eros International release Om Shanti Omselling it’s global rights for Rs 75 crore back in 2007.
So is the difference inflation or is the Shahrukh - Kajol jodi more valuable? Shahrukh and Kajol playing opposite each other has always resulted in screen magic and cinema goers are anxious to see the two fall in love all over again even if it is only on the silver screen. The coupling has definitely been missed.
The film, co-produced by Johar and Khan, has a Rs 55 crore budget and is set against the 9/11 terror attacks and its impact on an Indian Muslim living in the US.
Business Standard asked Vivek Krishnani, head of distribution, Marketing and Syndication at Fox Star Studio about the deal. He said: “We have been in talks with Karan Johar for movie rights. That is the stated position. I do not know if any deal has been struck on this matter nor do I know if something has been worked out in Los Angeles.”
