8x10 Taveer:Movie Review

By tarn Adarsh:

Nagesh Kukunoor enters a new zone with 8 x 10 TASVEER: Suspense-thriller. His choice of the genre and subject material is also right. Yet, 8 x 10 TASVEER goes wrong, horribly wrong.

Now what was that? This is one question that haunts you at the end of the show. And, seriously, you want to direct this question to Kukunoor, who is also credited as the writer of this film.

Okay, let's dissect... The concept is interesting. The atmosphere is perfect. The mystery deepens with each passing minute. Just when you thought that Kukunoor had pulled it off, a twist in the tale pulls the carpet off your feet. The film crumbles and the impression generated by some brilliantly executed sequences evaporate into thin air.

For any whodunit to succeed, it ought to hold your interest till the very last frame. Most importantly, the answers raised in the screenplay have to be convincing and justified. But 8 x 10 TASVEER gets unbearable towards the penultimate 20-25 minutes. When the mask is taken off the killer's face, you are surprised. But the reasons that compelled him to act that way are childish. What happened, Mr. Kukunoor?

To cut a long story short, this
tasveer is out of focus!

8 x 10 TASVEER is about Jai [Akshay Kumar], who possesses supernatural powers. Jai is of Indian origin who works as a forest ranger in Canada. His life is shattered by a loss of an important person in his life - his father [Benjamin Gilani]. This personal tragedy leads him to use his unique supernatural powers to unravel the mystery.

Lara gives credit to Akshay:

Lara Dutta may be going on and on about her underwater stunts in Blue - well, there's little else she'll talk about, she's always so mum when it comes to anything else — but the lass is now also giving due credit to co-actor Akshay Kumar for those deep sea acts.

Apparently, it was Akki who suggested her name for the movie! “Akshay was the one who recommended my name for Blue,” she confesses. Lara told us that she wasn’t too comfy diving 70 feet under water with sharks all around, but it was Akshay who pushed her to do it. “I got a call from Akshay.

He suggested that I take some swimming lessons before the starting of the film, and that if I wasn’t comfortable then I could well back out of the movie altogether. But then Akshay has a favourite dialogue that works wonders for me. He says, ‘Tum nahin toh aur kaun?’ That really gets me!” laughs Lara.

Celina`s panty read "Slide to unlock"

Celina Jaitley was shocked when she learnt that her pictures from a photo shoot have been morphed to titillate and are being used by a website to sell gadgets. Livid at such crass misuse of her pictures in which the words on her panty reads 'Slide to unlock', Celina has taken the matter to the cyber crime department.

A miffed Celina said, “This is the price one has to pay to be part of the glamour world. When I got to know about it, I personally checked the website. I could not believe it, the pictures were gross. I have heard that these things happen but using my picture to sell some stuff on the Net is disgusting. We have already informed the cyber crime department and they will soon take action against whosoever is responsible for this shameful act.”

A source said, “Celina has spoken to her security agency managed by Ronit Roy and they have registered a complaint with the cyber crime department. She recalled that the pictures on the website are the ones for which she had shot more than a year ago. Back then, she had issues with the photographer because of which she had walked out of the shoot. In spite of following up with the photographer for over a year, he refused to part with the pictures. Looks like he sold these pictures to smalltime agencies, which passed them on to the website.”

Celina added, “I remember when I had shot for the pictures. I trust the cops and will wait for the law to take its own course.”

The magical jodi of Akshay and Ash in ‘Action Replay’

If she is the queen of Bollywood, he is definitely and undisputedly the King of Bollywood. And after a long gap, this King and Queen have come together for Vipul Shah’s ‘Action Replay’. Talking about pretty Aishwarya Rai and stuntman Akshay Kumar, the duo are set to appear after a long hitch of 6 years. Last, they had appeared together in 2004 in Rajkumar Santoshi’s action–pack film Khakee, where Ash for the very first time had portrayed a negative character.

While we wait with baited breath to see the dashing couple create magic on screen, you have a look at an exclusive still from the movie.

99: Movie Review.

Add to Jamespot

Movie Review: 99; Star cast: Kunal Khemu, Cyrus Broacha, Boman Irani, Soha Ali Khan, Mahesh Manjrekar and Vinod Khanna; Directors: Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK; Rating: ***1/2 - Justifies its tag line.

The film begins in 1999 Mumbai. Sachin (Kunal Khemu) and Zaramud (Cyrus Broacha) are two small time crooks who make moolah duplicating mobile SIM cards. It was a time when mobiles craze was just catching on and not many people carried mobiles. When cops raid Sachin and Zaramud’s place they steal a posh Mercedes and try to run but end up ramming it into a lamp post. Their problems multiply as the expensive car belongs to a ruthless underworld don cum bookie AGM (Mahesh Manjrekar). To recover his huge loss from them AGM gets the duo working under him. AGM then sends the two to Delhi to recover Rs. 20 lakhs from Rahul Vidyarthi (Boman) who had laid a bet on a India v/s New Zealand match under his syndicate. Now this Rahul is a chronic gambler and is forever in debt evading all those demanding back their money. He tries the same with Rahul and Zaramud. But the two succeed in getting back the money but then to their bad luck it gets stolen on their way to the airport. Now their only chance to recover all that money is that one match between India v/s South Africa that Rahul plans to bet on which he knows is fixed. But he is not sure on whose favour. How the trio with the help of Pooja (Soha), hotel employee and Kunal new found love try to find a way out of this forms the rest of this comic thriller.

The film carries the tag line - Part Fact, Part Fiction, Pure Fun. Rarely Bollywood film tag lines live up to the expectations raised but 99 is bang on. The makers have intricately woven situations (betting scandal, mobile phone nuisance) that actually took place in 1999-2000 with a fictional story and made it extremely entertaining. This film might just end the drought multiplex audiences were subjected to. What lifts the film to a great extent are the dialogues. The one-liners are terrific and all the actors are bang on with their comic timing. Director duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK have done a fantastic job over all but just that they could have kept the pacing even. All the scenes between Boman and his wife played by Simone Singh tend to drag and bring the pace down. But thats just a minor flaw. The film’s treatment is fresh and it keeps you hooked throughout.

Kunal Khemu’s fan following should multiply with this film. He is just too good. Cyrus Broacha in his first full fledged role in a Hindi film is howlarious. He is even funny in scenes where he doesn’t even have a line to speak. Boman is back in form after a long time. Soha’s shows she can be very good with comedy too. Simone Singh playing Boman’s wife is fair. But the two guys who stand out tall are Mahesh Manjrekar and Amit Mistry. Manjrekar’s poker faced humour leaves you laughing out loud. All his scenes with Kunal-Cyrus and the ones where he tortures his clients are extremely funny. Amit Mistry had last impressed in Ek Chalis Ki Last Local playing Abhay Deol’s gambler friend. Here he plays Manjrekar’s Delhi associate and he impresses yet again. In a cameo role, Vinod Khanna exudes style and fits the part perfectly as the big bookie and Boman’s nemesis.

99 is a cool movie to be enjoyed in this hot 2009 summer. Don’t miss it. Finally there is a clean, innovative comedy thats worth your money.
