Of all the genres in cinema, horror is the most difficult to direct, feels the maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma whose latest spooky thriller Agyaat hits the screens on Friday.
“A drama or a comedy can be carried forth by good performances but it is not so for horror. If not well directed horror can become unintentional comedy,” Varma, who was in Delhi to promote the film, told a news agency.
Is that the reason why few filmmakers dare to venture in horror genre?
“I am often asked this question as to why is horror still sidelined genre in Bollywood. It is because horror films are the most difficult to direct. To capture the emotion of fear, you require a certain finesse,” Ramu said.
Starring ‘Priyanka’ Nisha Kothari and south star Nitin in lead roles, ‘Agyaat’ tells the story of a film crew shooting in a dense jungle. Something mysterious, however, begins killing the members of the crew one after the other.
Reacting to the latest controversy that was raked up after dummies of dead bodies were hung on the hoardings of ‘Agyaat’ as a promotional gimmick, Ramu said the idea was to shock the onlookers.
“We are inundated with images and information and for anything to register it must have a shock value attached to it. It (dead dummies) was just an innovative idea to promote the film and I have no clue what was so offensive about it,” Varma maintained.
